DIY: fun state canvas art

IMG_7812.JPG

If you’re looking for fun ways to decorate your dorm room or just room at home, look no further because I found the perfect project. A canvas with your state on it is the perfect way to showcase a little bit of home to help you not feel as homesick. The best part is: this DIY project is so easy and practically self explanatory.

You’ll need:

  • paint
  • a plain white canvas
  • a brush

If you’re looking for some inexpensive paint both Target and Michael’s sells very inexpensive paint for only 59 cents!

Next all you need to do is google a picture of the outline of your state and pick the one you like! For example I just typed “State of Missouri outline” on Google and printed out one of the first few images!

IMG_7813.JPG

After that I just cut out my outline and placed it where I liked it on my canvas. After outlining my state in pencil all I had to do next is paint!

Hope this helps!

p.s. don’t forget to paint the little heart for where your city is! I think it adds a nice personal touch (:

DIY: tassel & pom-pom garland!

Processed with VSCO with c6 presetProcessed with VSCO with c6 presetProcessed with VSCO with c6 preset

About a week ago I was looking for some cool garlands to decorate my dorm room with, but when I couldn’t find any that I loved I thought why not just make my own!

All you’ll need for this DIY project is:

  • colored string
  • scissors
  • string or twine
  • a fork (trust me on this one)

That’s it!!

If you’re interested in making a tassel garland….

1. First wrap your choice of yarn around a piece of cardboard (I just found a box laying around my house and cut it) that is around 9 inches long. I wrapped my yarn around about 45-50 times to get my desired thickness.

IMG_7788.JPG

2. Next, I pulled my yarn off of the cardboard and tied a knot around the center of it. Then I used scissors to cut off both ends.

3. After step 2 is complete, all that I had to do next is fold my yarn in half and tie another knot about 1/4 down.

This is what my pile of tassel garlands look like after watching about 5 episodes of FRIENDS (:

This is the finished look…IMG_7820.JPG

If your interested in making your own pom-pom garland….

This one is so easy to make!! Seriously though if you don’t consider yourself a very “crafty” person don’t worry about it because this pom-pom garland is super simple to make.

1. Wrap your desired colored yarn around a fork. FullSizeRender 7.jpg

2. Tie a knot around the middle of your yarn while it’s still attached to the fork and then pull it off the fork

3. Cut off the ends at both sides and you’re practically finished! Pro Tip: for best results be sure to tidy up the edges with your scissors.

4. Attach a sewing needle to a piece of string, yarn, or twine and simply string it threw all of your pom-poms!

how to make the inspiration board of your dreams!

One of my favorite things to do is constantly change up the inspiration board hung up in my room. Inspiration boards are such a fun and unique way to show everyone a snippet of what inspires you!

Here are a few tips and tricks on how to make the inspiration board of your dreams:

  1. Think of things that inspire you!! Whenever I look up at my inspiration board I am always inspired to work hard and not be afraid to let loose and have fun.
  2. If you already have a bulletin board…Great! However, if you don’t have already have one look no further because I found the perfect bulletin board for you. Hint: it’s only $8 and from the greatest place on earth (aka Target). This one I found from Target doesn’t have a white border, but if that’s something that interests you then just do what I did and paint it white yourself with some inexpensive paint! Or paint it any other color that makes you happy!
  3. Start cutting out and finding things that inspire you. I love looking through magazines, newspapers, books, and even postcards for things to put on my inspiration board. However I must say that 80% percent of my inspiration board are pictures that I got from my Pinterest! I literally think I spend more time scrolling through Pinterest then any other social media platform.Screen Shot 2017-08-11 at 7.15.01 PM.png
  4. When you’re starting to add photos to your inspiration board don’t be afraid to make it your own and add some personal photos/polariods! I also love adding some inspirational fun quotes!
  5. Don’t forget to change up your inspiration board every once and a while! I think it’s fun to change up my inspiration board when the seasons are changing to help mix up the mood of my room.

I hope these tips helped you if you’re ever in the mood to get your #CraftOn and make your own inspiration board!

my love of journaling…

There’s something about bringing pen to paper that’s so magical to me. Ever since I can remember I’ve had a journal. Whether it was from the fourth grade when I was talking about the latest drama on the playground or now where I just love to talk about my day. For me, journaling is the perfect way to wind down. I honestly just find it so fun and relaxing! Right now I have three different ways of journaling that I love, and I wanted to share them with you!

My Design Book

IMG_7703.JPGProcessed with VSCO with c6 presetIMG_7710.JPG

Anyone that knows me, knows that if I had the choice of whether to go out to a party on a Saturday night or spend my Saturday night cutting up design magazines and collaging, I would choose collaging in a second. Here are A FEW pages from what I like to call my big black book of interior design.

My Journal

If you didn’t write about it, did it even happen? Some days I’ll write about what I did, but I also think it’s really fun to write about random things like my love of peaches for instance. I know this journal will be a great treasure of mine years from now, when I get to look back at some amazing memories.

Q&A a Day: 5 Year Journal

This journal is such a fun way to look back at how I’ve changed over the years. Each page of the journal has a new question it asks. It could be anything from what you ate for breakfast that day or when was the last time you went swimming. My favorite part is looking back at what I wrote last year and seeing how much/if my answer has changed at all.

Thanks so much for reading! I hope you got some good journal inspo!

Olivia

why I’ll never stop loving romantic-comedies…

Anyone that knows me, knows there’s nothing I enjoy more than watching a nice romantic-comedy (also known as a rom-com) to unwind. Some might call it sad, but I think I’m happiest while watching a Nancy Meyer’s movie. I literally think I have seen every rom-com in existence and that’s not even an exaggeration. I blame my mom who might love watching rom-coms even more than I do. When people used to ask me what my favorite movie is I would always try to say something impressive by saying Goodwill Hunting, Dead Poet’s Society, Catch Me if You Can, The Fugitive, etc. (all amazing movies by the way that I 100% recommend). However, when I think of my favorite movie it’s definitely a romantic comedy.

Here are my top 10 favorite romantic comedies…

1. The Holiday (2006)

the-holiday.jpg

Whenever I’m in a sad/bad mood I always watch this movie.  Honestly if you haven’t seen this movie yet, drop everything that you’re doing and WATCH THIS MOVIE.

2. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

maxresdefault.jpg

Such a classic. Kate Hudson became my ultimate girl crush after this movie.

3. Mamma Mia (2008)

mm7_L.jpg

Not even kidding when I say I watch this movie once every two weeks. It has such a happy and carefree vibe to it that makes me want to drop everything and move to an exotic island in Greece every time I watch it.

4. You’ve Got Mail  (1998)
1055772667.jpg

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan play the ultimate star-crossed lovers. Struggling antique bookseller (Meg Ryan) and owner of corporate Fox Books bookstore (Tom Hanks) might hate each other in person, but when they only know each other online as Shopgirl and NY152 it’s a completely different story…

5. Love, Rosie (2014)

Love-Rosie.jpg

I love this movie!!! I think it’s the overall aesthetic and vibe adds to the creative storyline. With all the twists and turns the plot line took I didn’t know what to expect by the end of this movie.

6. A Cinderella Story (2004)

27-facts-you-might-not-know-about-a-cinderella-st-2-9380-1472891202-0_dblbig.jpg

I remember the first time I saw this movie like it was yesterday. I was six, and I snuck down to watch it with my sister and and her friends while they were watching it down the basement. I blame this movie for giving me unrealistic expectations about love, high school, and boys since the age of six.

7. Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011)

crazy-stupid-love-19.jpg

If you want to watch this movie for just one reason do it for Ryan Gosling’s abs. That or Steve Carrell and Emma Stone being hilarious as always.

8. It’s Complicated (2009)

complicated_3_L.jpg

The ultimate guilty pleasure. Sometimes I watch this movie just to stare at Meryl Streep’s kitchen in awe.

9. Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

sweet-home-alabama.jpg

This is my mom’s all time favorite romantic comedy and she has impeccable taste. This movie tells the story of a young woman who’s reinvented herself as a New York socialite, but inevitably returns back to her roots in sweet home Alabama.

10. Friends With Benefits (2011)

friends-with-benefits-rules21.jpg

Such a funny movie to watch whenever you might be in the mood for a laugh. I seriously love this movie so much it has such a fresh take on the typical romantic comedy.
